ERROR MESSAGES
Error messages while starting CP
Messages that notify the user about errors or just inform about CP's
operating modes may be displayed when starting CP.
To operate normally the CP shell requires about 140 K of RAM. If
during loading the size of free memory is found insufficient, CP will flash
a message:
Insufficient memory.
This error is fatal. To continue your work you have to have sufficient
free memory.
Invalid disk or directory for Panel B in setup file
Current disk & directory is set for Panel B
Use [Ctrl-S] Function to write correct setup.
Strike any key . . .
This error occurs when it is impossible to identify the drive and the
directory of Panel B (for instance, the directory has been deleted). This
error is not fatal and won't cause any problems for further work. You should
just hit any key and CP itself will correct the error.
When starting, CP loads the following five files:
- CP.STP,
- CP.EXT,
- CPEDIT.EXT,
- CPVIEW.EXT,
- CP.MAC.
These files specify CP's operating modes. The presence of the files
is optional: CP will be able to operate without them. However, if these
files are incorrect the user will be notified with the following message:
Bad file C:\CP\CP.MAC
These errors are not fatal. Incorrect files won't be loaded.
Bad key
Wrong parameter
You have entered wrong command line.
Error messages while working with files and subdirectories
When copying and moving the following error messages may pop up:
Insufficient disk space
It is impossible to copy the file because there is no room on the disk.
If you copy a group of files those files that have been copied will be
untagged and the rest of the files will remain tagged. To proceed, simply
insert an empty diskette and re-enter key combinations [Ctrl-F5], Ctrl-F6],
[Alt-F5] and [Alt-F6].
No tagged files
This error message appears if you forgot to tag files and attempt to
perform a group/global copying, moving or deleting.
Handling disk errors
In the process of operation CP performs numerous read-write operations
on disk. The following disk-error messages may appear:
- disk is write protected,
- invalid drive,
- drive not ready,
- CRC-error,
- search error,
- unknown format,
- sector not found,
- out of paper,
- write-disk error,
- read-disk error,
- general failure,
- file sharing error,
- file locked,
- disk change not allowed,
- FCB unaccessible,
- sharing buffer overflow,
- wrong font,
- input complete,
- drive full.
Disk is write protected
This error message is issued if you attempt to write information to a
write-protected disk.
Invalid drive
This error message appears if you try to address a non-existent drive.
Drive not ready
The most probable source of this error message is that you forgot to
insert a floppy disk or close the floppy-drive door.
Search error
Usually this error message indicates that something is wrong with your
drive hardware.
Out of paper
This error message may come up when you try to use your printer which
ran out of paper.
The three following error messages may come up if the information on
a disk is corrupted or if you try to read with a low-density drive a
high-capacity diskette written with a high-capacity drive in a low-density
format. When these messages are issued you will be well advised to repeat
the operation several times, it may help.
General failure
This error can also arise when you try to read from or write to an
unformatted disk or a high-capacity disk formatted with a low-density drive.
Sector not found
This error message can also be issued if a diskette was formatted with
a "800" driver in a non-standard format and you try to address it on the
system where this driver is not installed.
CRC-error
This error message appears, if the data on a disk is corrupted and a
wrong CRC sum is obtained.
The following message is displayed on the screen in case an error of
the kind occurs:
+---------------------------------+
| Error |
+---------------------------------+
| |
| Device not ready ------+--- error type
| reading drive A: -----+--- drive
| +---------------------+--- operation
| R-Retry A-Abort | when the
| | error occurred.
+---------------------------------+
Press "R" to retry an operation (after the cause of the error has been
removed) or "A" to abort the operation that caused this error. When the
disk operation of reading the current drive is aborted CP will ask you to
enter a new current drive:
+-------------------------------------+
| Current drive is no longer valid. |
| Select a new one. |
+-------------------------------------+
File sharing error
File locked
Sharing buffer overflow
Can be encountered while running Share program in a network
environment.
Disk change not allowed
You will see it if you try to change a diskette in the course of
uncompleted read/write information.
The rest of the error messages can appear while copying/moving files
from/to special devices PRN,AUX, etc.
